The 4th Greener Skies Aviation Environment Conference was held on September 27, 2011 in Hong Kong. Speakers debated the framework, jurisdiction and practical applications of the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme as it affects the global aviation industry from January 1, 2012. A week after Greener Skies 2011, the industry received an anticipated setback in its goal to establish a global ETS. On October 6, the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Brussels said in a non binding ruling it did not support the airline industry’s challenge to include aviation in the EU ETS.

In 2012, at the 5th Greener Skies Aviation Environment Conference, the EU ETS will be part of the conference debate along with other critical measures in emissions reductions including air space inefficiencies and biofuels for aircraft.

WHO ATTENDED

More than 150 delegates including the heads of the International Air Transport Association, the Chinese Air Transport Association and the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines, the Air Transport Action Group, the head of environmental affairs at the Air Transport Association of America and a Director of the European Union’s Directorate-General of Climate Action in Brussels.

More than 40% of delegates at Greener Skies 2011 were from airlines – the largest genuine airline representation of any regional conference – and another 15% of attendees were from airports across the region. Greener Skies 2011 also attracted regional heads from Boeing and Airbus, leaders of companies producing biofuels for aviation, academics, financiers, diplomats and a large media contingent.

WHY THEY ATTENDED

Since the first Greener Skies aviation environment conference was held in 2007, the conference has built a reputation for quality speakers and cutting edge subject matter coupled with delegates specifically related to the processes or the decisions in aviation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Speakers recognise their presentations will receive widespread media coverage and attendees enjoy the cohesive structure of the conference which ensures they broaden both their knowledge and their contacts in matters of aviation and environment.
